Amazing guys...
We have a school friends' egroup and we started reminiscing abt our school teachers. And the discussion has taken me back in time... and I just realized that its been 10 yrs since we left school!!! man... thats been a long time :)
I remember almost all the teachers who I've studied with.. Some of them are still there at the school and some arent. But, its great just to think of them. They will always hold a special place in my heart!
Not everything here would make sense to everyone of you.. still..
The english mam in 11th and 12th was Mangala Ranganathan and yes, she died a couple of yrs after our batch. And before that, our very own Padma Dorairajan who used to live kinda opposite to one of the cricket grounds that we used to play.. near Prasanna's house i guess.. And in 6th or 7th, it was Sulochana teacher who used shout like "daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaei", "ennna daaaa rubber maari irundhukittu thullara"
She used to ask us to write one question and answer every day as home work and she would spend the first ten mins or so correcting them in the class row-by-row.. And I and some people who would be sitting on the last benches would start writing that homework in the class when she starts her round. And we would pick one small Q&A.. typically one-line answer and keep writing the same everyday.. She didnt notice it for a longtime ;) And once she found out, Prem Shankar got the beatings... (as he's the person sitting on the corner of the bench!)
The last time I visited our school, Modern Senior Secondary School, Nanganallur, Chennai, I spoke to the Principal & Secretary, Ganga Prabhu teacher, Girijas (both of them), Indra teacher, Padmavathy teacher (LP - compu), Computer Lab Sir, Madhavan sir and our dear Feetisir :) Even Sundarakanchana ma'm (biology) recognized me though didnt know my name.
Kalpana teacher who pitched-in (as Savitha ma'm was leaving for Canada) for our 12th std had left the school and went to Muscat or some place after a couple of years. I still remember her in one orange saree.. Amazingly beautiful and serene! And a very nice person who was totally interested in clearing all our doubts (and typically it was Madhavan 'n Sekar going with all the IIT level doubts after the class)
And talking of beautiful ma'ms how can one forget Saira Vachali who took our biology classes in 8th and I guess was also the class teacher for sometime.

And recalling teachers: we have to pay special tribute to Padmavathy
(Tamil) for the countless extra P.T. periods she awarded us in the afternoons.
This used to lead to Mangathai (right?) the PT teacher for kids, getting extremely irritated with us. This also led to another historic occasion:
Once during such PT periods, we couldn't get the football as some kids (5 or 6th std) were playing with it. This led to diplomatic requests from our side, to which the kids turned a dumb ear (with out realising the consequences, of course). Then, what happened is history. That image is etched in my memory. There were around 10-15 kids around the ball literally
falling over one another to get it.
Then I remember Bhaskar walking into the pile. And, I am not exaggerating, the kids started to fly out of the pile one after the other until Bhaskar stood in the middle with the ball. And of course flashing his all too innocent (kd kannayiram) smile.

Having done 9 years of schooling in the same school (Chakravarthy), I too have similar thoughts. But the bad part is that I seldom come across anyone from the same school:(

In early eighties, I was in Modern – quite a lot of unforgettable moments – I cannot say all at one go. Of course, remembers teachers – Padma Dorairajan (English), Indhra (Chemistry), Saraswathi (Maths), Philomina (Tamil), Vasumathi (Geography), Kowsalya (History), Sasikala (Electronics) and Sivasamy (the Princy). Also comes to my mind – Prabha – Maths (real terror for me – not the subject, but the teacher, couple of years ago surprised to see her in Sun TV’s Arattai Arangam, kumbakonam episode in her usual flow), Mangala Ranganathan – English (real trouble for me when she insists me to pronounce `Division’,`Revision’, etc), Mangathai –PT (never likes us playing cricket – Ramachandran was our captain, in fact, a genuine alrounder, where is he now?) Seethalakshmi (those days she was not the principal – During my 8th Std. Annual exams I was carrying so many `bits’. To the surprise & shock of everyone, Seethalakshmi stormed into our exam hall and caught half a dozen of our fellows red handed. The moment I saw her entering our hall, I through all the `bits’ that I had. But, Seethalakshmi was intelligent enough to notice the Pilayarsuzhi marks in the bit very similar to the one in all pages of my answer paper. Thus I was caught. Except me, all the others were retained in the same class as a punishment. And even today, I believe - only that Pillayarsuzhi in the all the `bits’ have saved me from fall)

I was in the Cricket team and I am not sure I recognize you. Which batch are you from ?

In that post I forgot to tell about some teachers - you know, when I joined Modern (Fifth Std), Hanna Mercy was our class Teacher).
My full name is VxExxNxKxAxTxExSxH and quite common as `konni' in friends cricles. Many of my batch mate names come to my mind, I can give u few now - Ramachandran, Raman & Lakshmanan (Twins), Aanand (his brother Thiagarajan, nicknamed as `plug' could be your batch mate) , Saravana Prasad, K.M.Seshadri.
As you were in the cricket team, I think you can recognize BV Gowrishankar & Chandraprakash, both are known fast bowlers.
We were in Mangayarkarasi Nagar V Street (just behind Dr.Neela's Hospital) before moving to Madipakkam (Baliah Nagar).
How about you? Could you please tell.

I am vaguely able to recollect you but I am afraid not so clearly. I joined in Class VII when I came from Delhi. We used to live in SB Officers Colony and later in MMTC colony.
I remember Hanna Mercy. She was teaching I guess some subject for us probably History after Kausalya Miss.
Yes I remember B V Gowrishankar. I think he was 2 years Jr. to me. My class mates are Raghunath, Narayan Kumar etc. in case you remember and all of us were in the Cricket team when Mr. Shivaswami was the princi.
Along with us was Madhu the mallu guy who was a bowler too. I am trying to recollect more names but am failing.

Came across this page thru' google search on "Modern school"!!! It has been over a decade since i visited our School, the only school i've known and studied. Last time i visited our school was during the schools' annual day(early 90's). Saw a few familiar faces among the teaching staff(Hmmm...Wonder if they are still around). Reading thru' these blog postings brings back forgotten name and memories. Its a shame we never had the tech. during those days,, like we do now, to stay in touch.
It was nice to read a lot of familiar names(including mine!!!) mentioned here. I would like to add a few to the list(of teacher) who made a difference, Ruby/Lakshmi/Srinivasan(Math), Vimala/Veena(Physics) and Kausalya(Chemistry). I am sure there are others(my memory fails me). Not sure if anyone remember Ruby or Veena. They were teaching during early 80's.
During my last visit, i could hardly recognize the place anymore. I can't find any open fields. We used to have open space all around the school. I wonder where they play soccer/cricket/etc. during PT these days.

Except for Kausalya & Srinivasan, I dont seem to recognise any of the teachers you mentioned. I am pretty sure that only a few of my own teachers remain with the school.
Last heard, Kausalya is married and settled in calcutta and Seethalakshmi had retired.
I guess there's no formal website for our school, otherwise Google must have found it..

Hi Bhaskar, I am AK - batchmate of Cogito and matter mahadevan.. XII pass out - 1993 - Fond remembrances re-kindled... Your were right about Kalpana Madam ( Maths ) ... She was the most impartial teacher I have ever seen. Then there was Savitha (maths) - she used to give us punishments even when we were in the XIIth -Like standing up on the bench - ha ha ha... Modern school will remain close to my heart ...forever
though close, yet so far; memories, as they teem and inundate your mind leave behind a final gasp of nostalgia.
