prove us wrong iipm...

[Disclaimers/Disclosures:
whatever written in this space is my own responsibility..
I have a couple of relatives who studied/studying from IIPM. And I studied from an IIM. ]

i dont want to spend much of my time on an institute like iipm.. suffice to say that if it is even worth a wee bit, it should tender an unconditional apology, taking responsibility for its own behaviour and that of its students. but then, knowing iipm well, i am just asking for too much.

my 2 paisa of facts here...

-students who get into IIPM are those who havent got into an IIM or one of the other top A tier institutes (this is plain vanilla.. ask any serious MBA aspirant)

-IIPM extracts lakhs of money as course fees

-IIPM does not give 'free' laptops to its students

-IIPM students have an optional international industrial tour/training. and the students who opt for it have to shell out tens of thousands of rupees. And they just visit some cities and a few company plants (like one's school industrial visits), basically having fun outside, usually europe.

-Arindham Chaudhari got his own degree (and gold medal?) from the very institute his father started.

-IIPM carries quarter page Ads in the Times of India and Economic Times during the student admission season. (And you know the lakhs of rupees it costs for such an Ad) (yesterday, it ran a full page Ad!)

-students give a lot of presentations in formal attire.. blazers et al

-And the exceptional students get a decent job.. one of my relatives, he topped last year at IIPM mumbai and he got a job with the Essar group for some 4lacs. Last heard, long after their course completed, many of his batchmates were still looking out for a job (read.. any job. that is after many many joining some door-to-door sales job or as a teaching faculty in still shadier colleges)

I think that the media should be informed about all this. I think they are unaware because no one has written about it till now. So, I compiled a list of editors and it would be good if you mailed them too. You can find the list here.

This fight against IIPM is important enough by itself for people to support. However, many are wondering about Arindham Chaudhuri & exactly where he gets his funding. Consider the following

1. His bollywood movie "Rok Sako To Rok Lo" probably cost Rs 100+ crores to make. It became the first full-length feature film to premiere on a wireless cellular network - Airtel's. Subscribers to India's Airtel service apparently got to watch a streaming version of this film on their phones on December 9th, 2004. Not sure how much extra he paid for this but it must have been quite steep. The movie itself crashed & burned at the box office. Losses galore there, according to some friends in mumbai.

2. His book "The Great Indian Dream" was heavily marketed & this must have cost a fortune. During my last trip to India, I used to review the ten leading Indian print dailies on a regular basis to get a flavour of developments in the country. One of the things that caught my eye was the ubiquitous presence of 8x10 ads pushing the "The Great Indian Dream" in virtually every newspaper. A businessman friend tells me that the costs of this prolific advertising in major newspapers would have been in the tens of crores. He claimed to have received a 7-figure advance from the publisher for this book but revealed to The Hindu that he never got the actual money. It was just an advertising gimmick.

3. Arindham C. is supposedly the founder of PlanMan Consulting "which is now one of the fastest growing Indian Management Consulting Firms with offices in Canada & the USA." Unfortunately, PlanMan Consulting's URL at www.planmanconsulting.com is a dead end!

4. Arindham C. is supposedly the founder of "Great Indian Dream Foundation" whose mission includes ridding India of "its inhuman indignities" & envisions that "this dream take the form of a revolution". Odd to hear naxalite rhetoric emerging from the mouth of a so-called business management guru. Another interesting point: The GIDF website prominently displays a picture of Sachin Tendulkar, who appears to be endorsing the Foundation.

Of course, The Chaudharis are no fools.. (in fact, they are very smart and have made their BMWs...)

they have started publishing a 'thought-provoking' article just underneath their own Ad.. (it is supposed to provide mba aspirants some food-for-panel-discussion) and it is good quality.

But, the point is not whether they are worth it or whether any particular offering or magazine they produce is good.... it is about the whole package....

Mr. Chaudhari knows the Kotler principles of Marketing and is quite an evangelist for marketing. But, he forgot the importance of integration and of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

And he also doesnt know the limits to marketing... (forget about his fake marketing) or the negative effects of marketing when the product itself is faulty.

Putting a hippy haircut on an Indian.. wouldnt make him a RedIndian!!!
