It been quite sometime.. Thought I could start a discussion :)
What better topic than 'soul mates' ?!
Well.. let me get the ball rolling.. by trying to define them..
The idea of 'soul' is about something that is a part of you and me and everyone and which is supposed to be pure and immaculate and at a plane above one's body. This idea kinda goes together with rebirth.
And the idea of 'soulmates' is quite romantic... these are people who are made for each other and the connection is at the highest plane... their souls. This is supposed to connote bliss and celebration!
Well.. I'll tell you my personal opinions on the topic after hearing from you.

While I agree with ur view that a soulmate is a person with whom you are connected at the highest level possible, I kinda have some bad experiences with the part where one has to find his/her soulmate.
Now this is a process upon which an entire epic could be written upon. What say you?

also the idea is quite vague and without a scientific proof. and like all "romantic ideas".... is pretty stupid too. :-X

Ms. V.. there seems to be some kind of validation for the concept.. I came across some interesting work by Dr. Brian Weiss.. talks about past-life regression hypnosis! better still..ask any believer :)

For most of India, soul mate is someone who's made a soul mate without the consent of the soul.
Can you define the boundaries of your argument? Asia/ western world etc? :)

Do you believe in god? well.. not exactly.. but i do believe that there is some force that is above the normal perception (human) levels.
my belief about soulmates is somewhat similar.. i believe that there is some connection at the higher than perception / rational levels between such people.
i read something about this topic a few days back that got me thinking. Dr. Brian Weiss is the person who wrote that.. a book by name "only love is real". In that, he talks about past life regression hypnosis.
he says that a person under deep hypnosis can be made to visit his/her previous lives. and he uses this technique to treat his patients with phobias or relationship-related problems.
for eg., he talks about someone who had this morbid fear of water. upon hynosis, the doc (actually the patient also registers whatever he sees during the session) finds that the person in one of his previous births, is a small boy who is going on a ship with his family. And a sudden storm tosses the ship and the boy is thrown into the water. After a lot of struggle, the boy dies and this experience, he says, is what is bothering the person in the present birth. now, after hypnosis, when the person sees that (with some coaching) his fear has got nothing to do with the present, he gets ok.
the book is actually about two of his patients who are from different parts of the world having some different relationship problems. during the course of his sessions with them (separately), the doc finds that the two recount exactly the same incident from their previous births that is bothering them.
The rest of the story (true story) is about how they are actually soulmates and how they get together.
there is more to say.. but then, this comment has become quite long. will continue at another place another time.

Just to take this discussion a little further, if you don't restrict this to only "soul mates" in the true sense of the word, I've always wondered why we hit it off with some people at the first instance, while we simply cannot gel with a few people in spite of spending more than a few years with them.
I guess there surely is more to this phenomenon than meets the eye. Like I was telling you the other day, friends are probably the only people that we get to pick and choose. And the reasons why we pick some people and don't pick the rest is probably due to this "more than meets the eye" kind of reasons.

Yeh..Jam. If you think a bit more, you will see that, typically, this kinda 'love at first sight' doesn't begin with the first sight!
Either the looks of the person reminds you of someone (whom you have fond memories of) or some characteristic (that more than meets the eye thing) of the person reminds you of someone such.
Just a quick note on'past life regression',which is an elusive concept and it has been considered as false memories ,which are nothing but a distortion of some event in present life and a product of imagination,intentional / unintentional suggestions from the hypnotist.........
